What Do I Need to Know About Stump Grinding in Manchester, WA? Purpose, What Happens to Roots & More

When you need to clear some land, it is common to have a tree removed. When removing a tree, they are cut down and then taken away from the property. However, now the land is left dotted with tree stumps. When you need to clear the land for a construction site or you need it flat for health, safety or other reasons, you will need to have the stumps removed as well. Straight Up Excavation & Drainage would like to share how tree stumps are removed with stump grinding and even answer some common questions and concerns.

What is the Purpose of Stump Grinding?

Stump grinding is when a specialized tractor equipped with a grind comes out to remove the stump. Tree roots can go very deep into the ground and spread out very far. You cannot simply pull out the root system of a tree from the ground. One of the most effective ways to get rid of a stump is to grind it down to the ground. The heart of the tree will be removed so it cannot grow back. Not only is the stump grinded down, often the grind will dig down about 10 inched below soil level. The site of the tree stump will need to be filled which is often done during soil grading.

What Happens to Roots After Stump Grinding?

The core of the stump is removed but some of the extending root system will remain in the ground. The extended root will not survive without the core of the stump. You do not have to worry about a tree growing back. As the stump is grinded down, the stump is broken into tiny pieces, becoming a mulch. You can reuse the mulched pieces for a garden bed if desired. In most cases, the site of the tree stump will be cleaned up as part of the service.

When Can Stump Grinding Not be Done?

When it comes to removing stumps, usually stump grinding is used for stumps that are still in the ground. If a tree has fallen over and has become up rooted, another method will be used to remove the stump. Often a large tractor will come and pick up and remove the stump when a tree has fallen over. In order for the stump to be ground down, it cannot move around. The root system must be strong enough to hold the stump in place while it is being ground out.

If the stump is loose in the soil due to any means, the stump will require other methods of removal. Also, once the ground and soil are frozen, stump grinding becomes very tough, and harsh on the machinery. Because of this, stump grinding is often not done in the winter.

Is Tree Stump Removal Necessary?

It is important to have the stump removed. Some people will decide to work around and live with the tree stump. However, this is a mistake. In the state of Washington, there are termites that would love to call your tree stump home. As the next generation breeds and leaves the nest, they often go to the closest, suitable nesting site. In many cases this is your home. Termite invasion can become a very expensive problem to deal with. To avoid a termite invasion, also remove the stump.
